Pittsburgh Independent
Pittsburgh's above ground underground newspaper
About
Good journalism unites! It fights for the common good, and holds the powerful to account.
As liberty erodes, and our natural and social environments degrade, upstanding independent journalism becomes increasingly vital.
Since day one, Pittsburgh Independent has been at the vanguard of reporting, breaking news on politicians’ crony pay raises, audacious claims by fossil fuel behemoths, deep dives into Allegheny County’s push to privatize juvenile detention, and much more.
In 2023, four Pittsburgh Independent contributors were nominated for a total of six Western PA Press Club “Golden Quill” awards, with wins in both the “traditional feature” and “business/tech/consumer” categories, weekly/nondaily division.
The Independent adheres to the four principles established in the Society of Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics: to seek truth and report it; minimize harm; act independently; and be accountable and transparent.
If you believe an error is present in any of our reporting, please bring it to our attention by emailing info [at] pghindependent.com. Any corrections, clarifications or changes to stories will be updated and noted on the story page.
The Independent belongs to the Pittsburgh Media Partnership, a cohort of some 30 Pittsburgh media organizations. Pittsburgh Independent has collaborated on reporting with the Pittsburgh Institute for Nonprofit Journalism, Pittsburgh Union Progress, and others. You may have heard us on the ‘DVE Morning Show, or City Cast PGH. Or perhaps you even saw our print issue around…
